Declaration of Snow Emergency - Borough of Media (Delaware County) The
Mayor of the Borough of Media (Delaware County) has declared a snow emergency
beginning Wednesday, February 10, 2010 through Friday, February 12, 2010 pursuant
to § 291-49 of the Borough Code, in order to facilitate the movement of traffic
and to combat the hazards of snow and ice along designated snow emergency routes.
It is unlawful, at any time during the continuance of the emergency,
for any person to park a motor vehicle or to allow that vehicle to remain parked
anywhere on any snow emergency route. It is also unlawful to drive any motor vehicle
on any such snow emergency route unless that vehicle is equipped with snow tires
or chains. Residents are strongly encouraged to abide by these regulations and
leave travel to that of emergency response vehicles and Highway Department vehicles
to properly plow the roadway. As a last resort, the Borough may have to levy a
fine or tow vehicles that are not moved off of snow emergency routes in a timely
manner. The snow emergency routes are as follows: NAME

BOROUGH ORDINANCE 996
REQUIRES THAT A PROPERTY OWNER/OCCUPANT CLEAR A PATH
A MINIMUM OF THREE (3) FEET WIDE ON THE SIDEWALK(S) ABUTTING THEIR PROPERTY WITHIN
24 HOURS OF THE END OF A STORM.
- "Adopt-A-Fire Hydrant"
While Clearing Snow
Would you have guessed there are over 100+ fire
hydrants located alongside the streets in Media? Although the Fire Companies have
maps in the fire apparatus identifying the location of each of these fire hydrants,
winter storms and plowing operations can often hide the hydrants under a mountain
of snow making them impossible to find quickly. The Fire Departments are seeking
the assistance of those residents who have a fire hydrant located along the street
frontage of their property and asks these residents to "Adopt A Hydrant".
After a snow storm, as your driveway and walks are being cleared, take a minute
or two and check on your neighborhood's fire hydrant and dig out a 2 - 3 foot
area completely around the hydrant. If you are not able to dig yourself, ask a
neighbor to help you or have several neighbors agree to take turns. Water is still
the principle agent used by the Fire Department to control and extinguish fires.
Delays in locating and hooking-up to a fire hydrant can seriously hamper a fire
suppression operation, raising the risk of injury and possibly resulting in additional
property damage. It's clearly to everyone's advantage to avoid the problem of
locating and connecting to a hidden fire hydrant buried under a snow drift. Please
help and "Adopt A Hydrant."

anticipated winter weather. SEPTA will follow-up with a new date for this community
meeting once it has been rescheduled.

- Emergency Messages
Provide Warnings For Residents of Delaware County
Residents of Delaware
County are invited to enroll in "Delco Alert," a regional community
alert system which transmits emergency text messages of public warnings.
County Council Vice-Chairman John J. Whelan said the alerts provide emergency
information via text messages and e-mail devices of threats to security, severe
weather, road closures by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on major
highways and other dangers and emergencies.
"Delco Alert" is
the identity in Delaware County of ReadyNotifyPA, which is administered by the
Roan Secure Alert Network (RSAN) in the five-county southeastern Pennsylvania
region which also includes Bucks, Chester, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.
Residents can sign up to receive the alerts at www.co.delaware.pa.us, the
Delaware County Government Web site, and using the "Delco Alert" link.
Entire families can be enrolled in the system under a single user name. Points
of interest such as residences, schools and workplaces can be marked on a map
so warnings concerning those locations can be sent to the user. Residents can
receive warnings which are local or regional. Residents who work or go
to school in Philadelphia or another county can sign up to receive warnings from
those jurisdictions as well as from Delaware County, Whelan said. He said any
information provided will remain confidential within the system and will not be
used for anything other than sending emergency messages. Whelan encouraged
residents to enroll to receive text or e-mail messages from as many counties as
necessary to fully benefit from the system. "We live in a region
with nearly 3.5 million people who cross county lines regularly to travel to and
from their homes, jobs, schools and to pursue other interests," he said.
"Whether we are dealing with floods, severe storms or threats to homeland
security or other threats or dangers, we recognize that emergencies don't stop
at our borders." There is no cost to enroll in "Delco Alert."
However, recipients of the messages may be charged a fee by their service providers
if there is a charge to them for such messages. If having difficulty understanding
the instructions to enroll in the system, contact the Delaware County Emergency
Services Department from 9 AM-4 PM Monday-Friday at 610-565-8700 or send an e-mail
to rsanhelp@icdc.com for assistance.
