Third Street Pedestrian Bridge Information
Media Borough will be completing the removal of the breached earthen dam and reconnecting Third Street through the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Media Borough Council is committed to keeping the public informed throughout every stage of this important transportation project. Stay tuned for further updates and milestones.
March 2023: Legal Settlement
On March 17th, 2023, Judge Dozor signed the settlement agreement, bringing an official end to the former litigation between Borough of Media, County of Delaware, and Broomall’s Lake Country Club. This settlement relieves Media Borough from the legal obligation to design and construct the West 3rd Street Dam. Notably, significant time and financial resources from the general fund were contributed by Media Borough to finalize this agreement.
April 2023: Options Presentation
Schnabel Engineering provided a presentation during the Council workshop meeting to describe the options to reconnect Third Street with a vehicular bridge or a pedestrian/bicycle bridge. The presentation also described the lakebed and stream work that will be required by regulatory agencies, such as the PA Department of Environmental Protection and the PA Department of Transportation, to complete the process of removing the earthen dam which is currently in a state of partial breach.
June 2023: Council Decision for Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge
Borough Council further discussed the options for reconnecting Third Street, including cost estimates, pros, and cons of a pedestrian bridge or a vehicular bridge. Council publicly recognized the vast support for pedestrian bridge by residents, as noted in our adopted Open Space Plan, and decided to proceed with the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.
Fall 2023: Adding Environmental Team Members
In response to environmental advocates, Borough Council searched for environmental experts to guide the implementation of naturalized interventions in the project. The administration reached out to 10 different firms and organizations for their qualifications. Borough Council interviewed and chose a landscape architect firm and engineering firm (Viridian and JMT, respectively) to join the engineering team.
March 2024: Professional Services Approved
Media Borough Council approved a technical proposal from Larson Design Group (LDG) to provide professional services for the Third Street Pedestrian Bridge Project. LDG will be the lead project manager and transportation engineer. Schnabel Engineering will continue to be the dam removal specialist. Viridian is the landscape architect firm working hand in hand with the environmental engineering team, JMT to guide the wetland studies, stream restoration and mitigation, landscape plan, and public input process.
